To expand access to evidence-based treatment for substance use disorder, the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) is issuing a competitive grant program for healthcare organizations, using funds appropriated by the Michigan Legislature, to support hospitals in establishing or expanding hospital-based peer recovery coach (PRC) programs.
Hospitals are eligible to seek funding for any program or strategy that will expand access to PRCs, including expansion of existing programs or development of new programs.
Organizations will only be considered for this grant if proposed efforts create or expand access to hospital-employed peer recovery coaches. While partnerships with Community Mental Health (CMH) or other community-based organizations may be necessary, these funds will support hospital organizations who wish to hire PRCs directly.
MHA intends to use these funds to support organizations in building a structure around hospital-employed peer recovery coaches, allowing facilities to implement a program which will effectively implement PRCs into routine care for individuals with substance use disorder. This will also provide hospitals with dedicated time and resources to create a program that is equipped to begin billing Michigan Medicaid for PRC services in Fiscal Year 2026.
