Grant Description
Grants to New Jersey nonprofit organizations in eligible regions for initiatives to improve the health and wellness of local residents. Applicants must contact staff prior to submitting an application. Funding is intended for proposals benefitting underserved, vulnerable, and at-risk populations. The funder will consider applications that align with their mission to reduce health disparities for individuals and families in greater Newark, New Jersey, and the Jewish community of Greater MetroWest NJ which incorporates Essex, Morris, Somerset, Union, and parts of Sussex counties.

Types of project supported:

  • Program grants, primarily those that seed new initiatives, address emergent needs, and/or replicate a promising approach.
  • Capital and equipment requests improving access to health assets or services or establishing an equitable standard of care.
  • Projects infusing practices of compassion and humanism into the delivery of healthcare.
  • Capacity-building requests strengthening an organization’s ability to deliver and sustain high-quality services.

Special one-time grants: Grants considered in this limited, fast-track pool are generally awarded as one-time support and not considered for renewal. They should address urgent circumstances and/or be time sensitive, or fund limited-time initiatives.

Proposals for multi-year funding: The Foundation will accept a limited number of grant requests for funding a multi-year project up to three years. Grants can be in any program area and must outline why a multi-year grant will be helpful for project implementation and demonstrate realistic, clear goals with articulated short- and longer-term goals that can be accomplished within a 2-3-year timeline.

In reviewing applications for funding, the Trustees and staff of the Foundation are sensitive to the following six concerns:

  • Mission Appropriateness: A thoughtfully-designed proposal will demonstrate how the project will have a positive impact on the health and well-being of underserved populations within the communities in the Foundation's catchment area.
  • Potential for Systems Impact: The Foundation seeks proposals that promise innovation and change or a significant enhancement of existing services.
  • Plan for Assessment and Evaluation: Proposals should clearly identify the target population(s), the number of clients served, and the specific outcomes grantees seek to achieve, both within the grant period and longer term.
  • Potential for Fit/Partnership: The Foundation seeks grantee partners that are ably led, strive to empower those they serve and work collaboratively in their communities.
  • Grant Budget: The budget request should be commensurate with its anticipated impact.
  • Sustainability: Grantees should always demonstrate how they are working toward supporting the development, implementation, and sustainability of promising programs.

For more detail about each of the concerns, see the Full Grant Text URL.
